Fallout Impacts Rental Facility
It’s not the kind of disaster rental stores expect. When the story broke about Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State football defensive coordinator, being charged for allegedly abusing multiple underage victims from his Second Mile charity, the effects of the news couldn’t have been foreseen.
Longtime Penn State football coach Joe Paterno was fired mid-season, as was Penn State president Graham Spanier, and other staff members were charged with perjury. More victims are coming to light as the facts unravel.
The fallout has continued, not only with the university, but with the community of State College, Pa., and all its residents and businesses. “The trickle-down effect is unbelievable,” says Susy Glenn, owner, Best Event Rental, State College and Altoona, Pa.
In a two-week span, Glenn had several university-related events canceled, and anticipates more cancellations and less orders as the weeks go on. She says the main issue is the media coverage and future economic and perception concerns.
“At this time, the university doesn’t want any type of event to be misconstrued as a celebration, while the situation is occurring. The media has taken liberties to publicize everything and anything the university or students do, so there have been cancellations left and right. An awards dinner for the housing and food service staff was canceled. That was a shame — they work 24 hours a day,” Glenn says.
